Abstract

Linear aromatic polyesters are plasticised by adding a plasticiser in liquid form to hot molten polyester and mixing the polyester and plasticiser until an homogeneous mass is obtained. Specified polyesters are those obtained by the self-condensation of hydroxy acids, e.g. p-(b -hydroxy-ethoxy) benzoic acid, p-(hydroxymethyl) benzoic acid and p-(b -hydroxyethyl) benzoic acid; by the condensation of glycols and dihydroxy aromatic compounds, e.g. ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, hexamethylene glycol and hydroquinone with dicarboxylic acids, e.g. terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, 1,4-diphenoxybenzene - 41,411 - dicarboxylic acid, 1,4 - bis - (phenoxy - methyl) - benzene - 41,411 - dicarboxylic acid, (phenoxy-methyl)-4,41-dicarboxylic acid, phenoxy benzene-4,41-dicarboxylic acid and diphenoxy alkane dicarboxylic acids. Acid derivatives, e.g. amides, acid chlorides and esters may be used in the condensation. Specified plasticisers are the ether esters and glycollate esters of phthalic acid, aralkyl and aromatic esters of dicarboxylic acids, aromatic and mixed aliphatic-aromatic esters of phosphoric acid, sulphonamides and aralkyl ethers, e.g. dimethoxyethyl phthalate, diethoxyethyl phthalate, diethyleneglycol monoethylether phthalate, methylphthalylmethyl glycollate, ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, butylbenzyl phthalate, diphenyl phthalate, dibenzyl sebacate, tricresyl phosphate, cresyl diphenyl phosphate, methyl diphenyl phosphate, N-ethyl-o-toluenesulphonamide, N - ethyl - p - toluene sulphonamide and bis-(dimethyl-benzyl) ether. In the example, a molten ethylene terephthalate/ethylene isophthalate copolyster is plasticised with a mixture of diethoxy ethyl phthalate and butyl benzyl phthalate.
