Abstract

N-Methyl-o -sulphonic acids of diamido-azo compounds are obtained by sodium sulphide reduction of compounds of the general formula X-N2-Y-NH.CH2.SO3H or X-N2-Y-N2-Z-NH.CH2. SO3H (in which X contains a p-nitro group), the N-methyl-o -sulphonic groups remaining intact; a second o -sulphonic residue can then be introduced into the molecule by treatment with formaldehyde bisulphite. Examples are given of the reduction with cold sodium sulphide solution of the monoazo-dyes from diazotized p-nitraniline and the sodium N-methyl-o -sulphonates of aniline, 2-amido-4-cresolmethylether, and a -naphthylamine, and of the secondary disazodye from p-nitraniline, 2-amino-4-cresolmethylether and aniline-N-methyl-o -sulphonate of sodium; the last-named dyestuff may be diazotized upon the fibre and developed. The compounds which contain no sulphonic group in the nucleus are of special value in dyeing acetyl silk. Specification 11343/99 is referred to.ALSO:Acetyl silk may be dyed with the N-methyl-o -sulphonic acids of diamido azo compounds obtained by sodium sulphide reduction of compounds of the formula x-N2-Y-NH.CH2.SO3H or x-N2-Y-N2-Z-NH.CH2.SO3H in which x contains a p-nitro group and which do not contain a nuclear sulphonic group. A second o -sulphonic residue may have been introduced after the reduction. The reduction products of the following compounds are described:-monoazo dyestuffs from p-nitraniline and the sodium N-methyl-o -sulphonates of aniline, 2-amido-4-cresolmethylether, and a -naphthylamine; the secondary disazo dye from p-nitraniline, 2-amido-4-cresolmethylether, and aniline N-methyl-o -sulphonate of sodium. Azo dyes, forming on the material.-The last-mentioned product may be diazotized on the fibre and developed.
