Abstract

A method for the continuous heat treatment of artificial filaments comprises, with or without preheating, continuously coating the filaments with a film of a liquid which is capable of wetting the filaments, which has a viscosity at 50 DEG C. of not more than 1 poise, and which is maintained at a temperature within the range, 50 DEG C. to about the temperature at which the filaments are subsequently to be heat treated, the nature of the liquid being such that it is inert to the filament material at the heat treatment temperature and does not damage it at that temperature, and does not contain water, and thereafter continuously passing the liquid-coated filaments through a zone occupied by a heated gaseous medium in which zone the filaments are subjected to one or more of the following operations:-stretching, allowing to shrink, or heat-setting while being prevented from shrinking. Specified liquids are liquid hydrocarbons such as white oils and other mineral oils; halogenated paraffins, alkyl benzenes, diphenyl, chlorodiphenyl, diphenylether, diphenylamine, polyhydric alcohols, alkylene glycols, glycerine, polyalkylene glycols, polyethanolamine, aliphatic acids of medium and high molecular weight and silicone oils. In examples, the filaments are preheated to 130 DEG -235 DEG C. and then passed over preheated rollers. The filaments may be polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene, nylon 6, cellulose acetate or viscose. The treated filaments do not tend to discolour.
