Abstract

O - Carbethoxy - carboxybenzene is prepared by adding triethylamine to a solution of benzoic acid in dioxan, cooling to 0 DEG C., adding ethyl chloroformate, stirring for 3 hours while the solution attains room temperature, filtering off the triethylamine hydrochloride and distilling off the dioxan at reduced pressure.ALSO:Textile materials of wool, silk or high molecular weight synthetic linear polyamides or mixtures thereof are treated, before or after dyeing with acid dyes, with a mixed anhydride ester of the formula <FORM:1035321/D1-D2/1> wherein R is an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon residue possibly carrying alkyl or halogen substituents, R1 is an alkyl or benzyl group which may carry halogen substituents and n is 1 or 2, in order to produce resist or discharge effects. The compounds may be applied as organic solutions, e.g. in acetone, as aqueous/organic solutions, e.g. in 1:1 water/dioxan or as an aqueous emulsion to fibres which are subsequently combined with untreated fibres and dyed or by printing on to a fabric which has been or is about to be dyed with acid dyes. Among the anhydride esters listed O-carbethoxy-carboxybenzene and a -O-carbethoxy-carboxynaphthalene are used in the Examples which describe dyeing in fibres of polyhexamethylene adipamide.
