Abstract

In producing a continuous filament polyester yarn having a latent or potential crimp by melt-spinning and drawing between a heated feed roll and a draw roll driven at a peripheral speed higher than that of the feed roll, the yarn, after passing the feed roll, but before passing the draw roll passes between rotating intermeshing gears and also across a stationary narrow surface which is substantially at right angles to the path of travel of the yarn, the temperature of the surface being maintained at a temperature of at least 170 DEG C and the narrow surface being so arranged in the yarn path that the tension of the yarn holds it in contact with the narrow surface, but that the angle of deflection of the yarn path over the narrow surface is kept sufficiently small to obviate mechanical deformation of the filaments, such as occurs in the so-called edge-crimping processes. The narrow surface is preferably heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the polyester. The yarn may pass through the intermeshing gears either before or after it passes across the heated narrow surface. The tion treatment by heating under a reduced tension to a temperature between the second order transition temperature and the polyester. The yarn may be further subjected to a scouring treatment in a boiling aqueous medium. The yarn may be woven or knitted into a fabric before the scouring treatment. The full crimp potential of the yarn is not developed by the relaxation treatment but is further developed by the scouring treatment.
