Abstract

A monofilament, thermoplastic, e.g. nylon, yarn is textured by flattening selected portions (20-62 per linear inch) of the heat softened, previously drawn yarn so as to form segments of altered cross-sectional shape in the yarn in a uniform pattern whereby the yarn exhibits a variation in bending modules along the length thereof. The pressure and temperature of such treatment are so controlled as to effect permanent distortion of the yarn while maintaining a residual shrinkage of at least 5% in the flattened yarn. The latter is cooled whilst maintained in tensionless condition and the textured yarn is wound into a package under a controlled tension which prevents any further drawing thereof. As shown, a sheet 13 of monofilaments passes from a beam 11, through a reed 15, between one or more pairs of rolls, as at 19, 21, one roll driven and having a grooved surface to effect flattening of the monofilaments at intervals and the other roll smooth-surfaced, one or both rolls being heated internally as by circulating oil. Take-up rolls 25, 27 may effect positive filament cooling prior to package formation. In a knitted fabric comprising textured yarns combined with untextured yarns, effects, e.g. crepe, may be caused by a loop distortion produced during the knitting cycle due to the varying bending modules.
