Abstract

A method of manufacturing an elastic textile fabric, comprises the successive steps of twisting a single yarn made of a synthetic elastic and shrinkable material-e.g. spandex-assembling the elastic single yarn with a single yarn made of inextensible material by using an assembling twist of opposite sense to that of the elastic yarn to form a composite twisted yarn, manufacturing a textile fabric by using, at least in part, the composite yarn, and shrinking the elastic yarn by momentarily heating the textile fabric with steam up to the temperature producing total shrinkage without damage to the most fragile textile material employed in manufacture of the fabric. In examples the spandex yarn is twisted 650 or 2200 turns/metre and the inextensible yarn-which is a multifilament nylon yarn-200 or 650 turns/metre in the opposite direction, with in each case the assembling twist being 650 turns/metre. The composite yarn is subjected to a slow thermal stabilization treatment which, together with the fabric steam treatment, is described in Specification 1,018,953. The stabilized yarn, greased with a linseed oil base product, is made into a woven or knitted fabric. The yarn may be alternated in the fabric with a similar yarn but of opposite twist, or with a non-elastic yarn, and, in a woven fabric, may comprise part or the whole of the warp and/or weft. The non-elastic yarns may in an elastic crepe fabric be highly twisted yarns, yarns of high denier, or composite twisted yarns and in fabrics having a "foamy" appearance be slightly twisted yarns having a large number of filaments, or staple fibre yarns of polyacrylonitrile or natural fibres. Elastic crepe fabrics of "foamy" appearance may be formed using the two types of non-elastic yarns.
