Abstract

1345373 Rotary driers A M F Inc 15 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 40050/71 Heading F4G Tobacco is dried in an inclined rotary drier comprising inner and outer cylinders 19 and 25 provided with lifting paddles 42 and 38 (Fig. 4) having tubes 43 and 40 through which a heating medium is passed. Ducts 41 and 37 on the cylinders 19 and 25 are also supplied with the heating medium. The heating medium (steam or hot water) is supplied via rotary union 45, hollow shaft 14, distributor 46, and pipes 47 and 48 to annular distribution ducts 50 and 51 connected to the tubes 43 and 40, and ducts 41 and 37. Tobacco is introduced on a vibrating conveyer 34 to a sieve portion 33 of the outer cylinder 25, is fed by helical paddles 63 to the space between the cylinders 19 and 25, and is discharged by paddles 64 through apertures 65. Hot air entering at 60 flows counter to the tobacco and passes out through the sieve 33 which may be covered gauze kept clean automatically. The cylinders 19 and 25 are connected together by 26 and 27, the spokes 26 being resiliently connected to the cylinders, Fig. 5 (not shown), to allow for differential expansion, and the spokes 27 being connected to the cylinders by ball joints. The cylinders are rotated by a belt engaging the pulley 20; alternatively the pulley may be between the bearing 13 and the rotary union 58. Bearing 14 can accommodate axial sliding due to expansion. Air seals 28-32 and heat insulation 35 are provided. The distributor 46 may be divided by bellows or allow for differential expansion. A portion of the incoming hot air may be fed into the exhausted hot air to prevent condensation in the exhaust duct.
