Abstract

1,249,254. Ink ribbon mechanism. BURROUGHS CORP. 30 April, 1969 [9 May, 1968], No. 21926/69. Heading B6F. [Also in Division F2] Ink ribbon feed reversal mechanism comprises a continuously rotatable shaft 31 carrying two worm gears 35, 35<SP>1</SP> the worm gears being alternatively couplable to respective ribbon spool drive gears 25, 25<SP>1</SP> by axial movement of the shaft, such axial movement being caused automatically by tension in the ribbon 23, when a spool is empty, preventing rotation of the respective engaged drive gear 25 or 25<SP>1</SP>, whereby the drive to the respective worm gear urges the shaft axially. The axial movement of the shaft causes an actuator member 37 fixed to the shaft to move with respect to a spring detent 45, the actuator member 37 comprising a pair of base-butted conical frustums having an oblique elliptical bases joined at 37E so that as the join 37E passes the detent 45 the axial movement of the shaft 31 is assisted by the detent engaging the alternate conical frustum. Grooves 37A, 37B in the actuator member 37 define the two operative positions of the shaft. The shaft 31 is driven from a gear 41 which may be mutilated to effect incremental rotational movement.
