Abstract
1386893 Reverse gear ENGLISH NUMBERING MACHINES Ltd 11 Oct 1973 [11 Oct 1972] 46787/72 Heading F2D [Also in Division B6] Reverse gear, for driving selectively in opposite directions according to the direction of rotation of a driving motor M, two output shafts 1, 2, connected e.g. to the ribbon spools of a printing machine or typewriter, comprises a worm 6 driven by the motor M through a meshing wheel pair 4, 5, and meshing a worm 10 which is urged in one or other axial direction, according to the direction of the input torque, to engage dog clutch teeth 12, 13 on its ends sellectively with complementary teeth 14, 15 on the respective output shafts 1, 2, and the worm 6 is carried in a frame 8 pivoted about an axis 9, which may or may not pass through the mesh point of the gears 4, 5, and loaded towards engagement of the worm gear 6, 10 by a spring 19 which yields to excessive drive resistance to permit the worm teeth to ride over and thus prevent overload on the motor M. The motor is reversed automatically to change over and reverse the drive to the respective output shafts 1, 2 when a ribbon spool is empty.
