Abstract

1,247,576. Hydroplane ships; air-cushion vehicles. O. BURGESS. 28 Jan., 1970 [28 Jan., 1969], No. 4725/69. Headings B7A and B7K. An hydroplane ship has side walls 11 formed with bottom surfaces 14 of hydroplane form dimensioned to support the ship only when travelling at its design speed, the ship being raised to its hydroplaning position by supplying air under pressure beneath the hull between the side walls by a fan or compressor 15 in the hull, retractable walls 19, 20 or an air or water jet curtain, Fig. 5 (not shown), being provided forward and aft of the air space to contain the air-cushion. When the ship has reached its design speed, the air-cushion supply is shut down. The retractable walls may be formed by hinged rigid doors, as shown, flexible curtains, e.g. of plastics or rubber, or inflatable bags, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). Propulsion is by water jet 26-28.
