Abstract

1,190,621. Hull lubricating; stabilizing; refloating. J. W. GRUNDY. 9 April, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 16219/67. Headings B7M and B7S. A ship comprises a recess in its bottom divided into pockets 19 by longitudinal and transverse partitions which have their lower edges immersed in the water, means charging the pockets with air, and a duct 38 connecting a front and a rear pocket. The recess is formed by a rigid hollow skirt. Transverse partitions 27 are straight and have inclined front faces 28 but may be arcuate or have bulbous projections (28a, Fig. 7, not shown). In Fig. 5 (not shown), ducts (38) connecting front and rear pockets contain a blower or valve 41, and ducts (36) connect the front and rear of each respective pocket. The transverse partitions (35) are hinged to the hull with their free edges floating. A water level detector in each pocket controls the air supply to the pockets. An air collection chamber may be provided in front of propeller 30. The pressure difference between pockets on opposite sides of the ship may control stabilizing tanks or vanes. On running aground the ship may be raised by air pumped into the pockets. The ship may be braked by release of air from the pockets.
