Abstract
1,127,982. Air cushion vehicles. BRITISH HOVERCRAFT CORP. 26 April, 1967 [1 Feb., 1966], No. 4494/66. Heading B7K. A craft which may operate both as an air cushion vehicle and as a displacement vessel has a flexible under-structure 2 composed of an upper part 2a, which may comprise foam rubber encased in a fluid impermeable skin but preferably and as shown, is inflatable and subdivided by partitions 3, and a downwardly extending part composed of a plurality of U-section flexible contiguous elements 5. The bow, and, if necessary, the stern portion of part 2a is raised above the level of the side portions thereof and the lengths of the elements 5 are so arranged that their lower edges lie in a common substantially horizontal plane. The transverse members 5 are retractable so that with the vehicle operating in the displacement vessel role water can flow between the inflated side walls, relative movement causing the elements 5 to be swept rearwardly against the undersurfaces of the side walls. In the air cushion role the sidewalls are inflated by air which is delivered also to the cushion, but in the displacement vessel role the sidewalls are inflated to a higher pressure by a separate pressure source. Air may be blown down the inner channel faces of elements 5 to form air curtains.
