Abstract
1,106,753. Air cushion vehicles convertible into ships. BRITISH HOVERCRAFT CORPORATION. 1 Sept., 1966 [24 Sept., 1965], No. 40883/65. Headings B7A and B7K. An air cushion vehicle which may operate as a displacement water craft comprises at least one hull member pivotally mounted on the body of the vehicle and a flexible skirting assembly attached to said hull member and to said body so that when said hull member(s) are pivoted downwardly to provide support during the displacement mode of the vehicle, the skirting assembly is inoperative and when the hull member(s) are pivoted upwardly to be out of contact with the water during the air cushion mode of the vehicle, said skirting assembly assumes an operative position to contain the air cushion. Retractable and buoyant hulls 1 are attached at 5 to a body 3 which is formed with a duct 4 for the supply of cushion-forming air to the interior of an inflatable skirting assembly 2 attached at 6 to the body 3 and at 7 to the respective hull 1. The skirt is formed with nozzles 9 for discharge of curtain-forming air and the hull 1 carries arms 11 for an elongated roller 13 which, when the hull is pivoted by a jack 14-from the retracted position shown in Fig. 4 to the extended position shown in Fig. 2, the skirt is collapsed and drawn upwardly to lie against the wall of the body 1 the upper surface of the hull sealing the outlet of the duct 4.
