Abstract
1,222,521. Gas cushioned vehicles; water-jet propulsion. VOSPER Ltd. 7 Jan., 1969 [11 Jan., 1968], No. 1609/68. Headings B7K and B7V. A gas cushioned vehicle, having a hull 10 housing water jet propulsion means 14, comprises a retractable member 16, which has a keel-like member 18 and a planing surface 17 with two elliptical inlets 20 (Fig. 2) formed in the face of said surface and connected via a flexible duct 21 to the water jet propulsion means 14. Power units 12 supply the cushion pressure and a gas turbine engine 22 supplies auxiliary propulsion when needed. The retractable member 16, which is pivoted at 15 and urged downwardly by resilient means 19, is retracted during beaching operations, when the lower edge 18 of the keel 17 contacts the beach and compresses resilient means 19. Alternatively resilient means 19 can be replaced by a double acting hydraulic jack. Other embodiments have: two keels on either side of the planing surface (Fig. 1, not shown); the jet propulsion means ejecting water rearwardly aft of the rear skirt (Fig. 5, not shown); and the jet propulsion means being housed in the retractable member (Fig. 6, not shown).
