Abstract
1453663 Hydrofoil craft; air cushion vehicles R R GREER 8 April 1974 15495/74 Headings B7A B7K and B7S A hydrofoil craft is supported by lift forces from hydrofoil and aerofoil sections when moving at full speed and also by an air cushion when moving at lower speeds and comprises two side hulls 3, 4 carrying a plurality of outwardly extending adjustable hydrofoils adjacent their keels, which in one embodiment decrease in size from fore to aft of the craft, a deck 2 whose underside is inclined to the topside to produce lift, outwardly extending aerofoils at the bow and stern, vertical direction stabilizing fins 9, 10 at the stern and an aerofoil extending between the fins 9, 10. The amount by which the hydrofoils project from the hulls' sides may be varied by retracting a part of each foil into the respective side. To increase the lift forces created by the underside of the deck, a mist of water vapour may be injected into the airstream from nozzles on the inboard sides of the hulls 3, 4 to increase the air's density. The air cushion is formed in a space between the two side hulls 3, 4, the rear edge of the deck's underside and a retractable flap which stows in a recess in the underside of the deck adjacent its forward end. The craft may be propelled by propellers 24 or by air or water jets, and the exhaust from the air jet engines, when these are used, may be deflected by means of retractable scoops to form the air cushion. The air jet engines, which are disposed along the outboard sides of the side hulls 3, 4, may also be rotatable about transverse axes to provide additional upthrust. Docking.-The outwardly extending aerofoils at the bow and stern carry sets of vertical and horizontal wheels which engage in horizontal rails spaced to permit the craft to pass between when docking (Fig. 6, not shown).
