Abstract
1,235,552. Liquid development. XEROX CORP. June 10, 1968 [June 16, 1967], No.27467/68. Heading G2H. Images are formed by providing a layer of a material having a liquid crystalline phase, adjusting the temperature of said material to a temperature within its liquid crystalline phase temperature range, and providing across said layer an imagewise electric field, whereby to form a visible image in said layer. The imagewise electric field may be produced by placing the liquid crystalline layer between a charge image carrying layer and a conductive layer or shaped electrode to which a potential is applied and a conductive layer. The liquid crystalline layer is separated from the electrostatic image by a thin opaque insulating film. Specified liquid crystalline materials are cholesterol inorganic and organic esters and ethers, alkylamides and aliphatic secondary amines derived from 3-#-amino-#<SP>5</SP>-cholestene, anisaldazine, p-azoxy-phenetole and -anisole, p-butoxy benzoic acid and p-methoxy cinnamic acid. The image formed may be viewed by projection.
