Abstract

1358763 Modulating light XEROX CORP 25 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 29918/71 Heading H4F [Also in Division G2] A liquid crystal image results from forming a charge image on a member comprising a cholesteric liquid crystal layer between a photoconductive or insulative layer and a transparent coating layer which is insulative or partially conductive. The liquid crystal material may be cholesteric, in admixture with smectic or nematic, material. It may change from the Grandjean to the focal conic texture. A change in translucency, colour, birefringence, optical activity or circular dichroism may result. The charge image may be formed by uniform charging followed by imagewise exposure, direct imagewise charging (e.g. by an electron beam or shaped electrode or combination of electrodes), or transfer of an imagewise charge. The transparent coating layer may be of polyethylene, polyvinylfluoride, polyvinylchloride or a polyester. The layer may be up to 2 mils. thick.
