Abstract

1353396 Modulating light XEROX CORP 21 June 1971 [19 June 1970] 28937/71 Heading H4F [Also in Divisions G2 and G4-G6] The relaxation characteristics of an imaged cholesteric liquid crystal layer are modified by the application of a uniform holding electric field across the imaged layer and of a strength insufficient of itself to maintain the image. The liquid crystal material may be in the cholestericnematic phase transition temperature range producing a transparent image (dark through polarizers) on a milky white background or in the Grandjean to focal-conic texture change transition temperature range producing a white image on a coloured background. One or both field-producing electrodes may be transparent for viewing the image by reflected or transmitted light respectively. The image may be formed using an X-Y address system, electron beam address electric stylus or photoconductive member. The holding electric field may be maintained during application of an imaging electric field and subsequent pulsed uniform or imagewise electric fields of imaging strength (but not duration) to produce an image of constant brightness; by this means, an image may be built up using the X-Y address system.
