Abstract

1,042,493. Electrophotographic processer. RANK XEROX Ltd. May 17, 1963 [June 7,1962], No. 19692/63. Heading G2H. An image is formed by deformation on a liquid or thermo plastic layer separable from a xerographic plate, so that the layer may be removed from the plate displayed, erased, and then returned for re-use. The layer is deformed by induction effects of electrostatic latent image on the xerographic plate. In one embodiment, a xerographic plate 10, Fig. 1, carries a latent electrostatic charge 13 formed in known manner. The plate has a photoconductive postively charged insulating layer 12 on a conductive backing 11. The plate 10 is maintained in the dark and positioned on supports 14 closely adjacent an image plate 15 having a conductive layer 16, e.g., of paper or metal and a conductive liquid layer 17 e.g. of water, alcohol, mercury, Aquadag or a liquified resin material. A space 19 of between 1 and 5 units is maintained between the layers 12 and 17, while the layers backing 11 and layer 16 are connected to earth. Lines of force from the electrostatic image exert physical forces of attraction on the layer 17 which forms a relief image 18. In another embodiment, a deformable layer 21, Fig. 2 (not shown) solid at normal room temperatures is used in place of layer 17, Fig. 1. The layer 21, Fig. 2, (not shown) which may be "Staybelite" is supported by a conductive layer 22 on a heating element 23. In another embodiment a xerographic plate Fig. 3 (not shown) is positioned above a deformable insulating layer 25 and conductive liquid layer 26. A voltage is applied between layers 11 and 27 and the layer heated by heater 23, so as to liquify the deformable layer 2 5. The photoconductive layer 12 is exposed imagewise by a projector 31. The layer 25 is deformed by forces induced in the layer 26. In another embodiment a liquid layer 35, Fig. 4 (not shown) is positioned between layer 12 and a conductive deformable layer 36. Two non miscible liquid layers 38 and 39, Fig. 5, are positioned between layers 12 and 27. The layer 38 is insulating, e.g. oil and layer 39 conductive e.g. water. In another embodiment layers 36, 65, Fig. 6, (not shown) are liquifiable materials solid at normal room temperatures.
