Abstract

1396979 Developing OCE-VAN DER GRINTEN N V 14 Dec 1972 57781/72 Heading G2H In a method of developing a latent electrostatic image on a drum 9 the toner is transferred from a magnetic brush device 1 on to an intermediate donor member 6 under the influence of an electric field (3000-10,000 volts per cm) between the device 1 and the donor 6 and is transferred from the donor to the surface of the drum 9. A potential 10 may be applied between the donor and the drum to inhibit transfer of toner in the non-image areas. The toner employed has a specific resistance of between 10<SP>10</SP> and 10<SP>16</SP> ohmcm and may comprise a magnetically attractable component and an insulating binder component (e.g. a thermoplastic resin). Examples of both these components are given. The magnetic element of the magnetic brush may be bi- or multipolar and may circulate at a velocity different from the surface velocity of surrounding cylinder 3 or may be stationary with respect to the cylinder. A knife 11 removes surplus toner.
