Abstract
897,227 Printing processes. PHOTOSTATIC ENTERPRISES Ltd. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 7, 1958], No. 37281/59. Drawings to Specification Class 100(2) A pattern is produced on a surface by applying thereto a pigment suspended in an electrically insulating fluid vehicle, moving the pigment to the required locality by an applied electric field while the vehicle is still fluid, and subsequently fixing the fluid to the surface. The field is applied by needles arranged in a pattern forming one electrode, and a flat electrode on the opposite side of the surface, and may be 10,000 volts D.C. Pigments of more than one colour can be used, the different coloured particles having different charge effects and so moving to different positions. A colour pattern can be applied on a background of a coating of another colour already fixed by dipping or curing. One colour pattern may be formed and fixed, and a further pattern applied on top. A grid at a lower potential than the needles may be held between the points and the surface. The electrical resistivity of the coatings is greater than 10<SP>7</SP> ohm centimetres. The coating vehicle is a film-forming material, e.g. natural gums and resins such as shellac, thermosetting or thermoplastic resins, cellulose, cellulose esters, ethenoid plastics such as the ethylene derivatives, ethylene polymers, vinyl polymers, styrene polymers, polymethyl methacrylate, paraffin wax, cornacuba wax, beeswax, dammar, dragon's blood, or copal.
