Abstract

1459468 Electrography XEROX CORP 25 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 28045/74 Heading G2H An electric charge pattern is formed by: providing in imagewise configuration a layer of an injecting material on an electrically conductive substrate to form an injecting master, said injecting material being capable of generating and injecting electric charge carriers in response to an electrical field alone; providing a layer of an electrically insulating liquid on said injecting master; contacting the free surface of said layer of insulating liquid with an electrically insulating member; and, applying an electrical potential difference across said injecting material and said insulating liquid layer of sufficient magnitude to cause said injecting material to form a charge pattern on said insulating member as a result of charge carrier injection from said injecting material. Many suitable organic and inorganic injecting materials are specified and may be applied alone or combined with a binder; materials exemplified being polyvinyl carbazole alone, mixed with metal-free phthalocyanine, and combined with a melamine formaldehyde resin binder. The substrate may be coated with the injecting material by any convenient means, e.g. electrophotographically or by stencilling. Development of the charge pattern may be by any known electrographic method.
