Abstract

1459469 Electrography XEROX CORP 25 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 28046/74 Heading G2H Images are formed by: providing in imagewise configuration a layer of an injecting material on an electrically conductive substrate to form an injecting master electrode, said injecting material being capable of generating and injecting electric charge carriers in response to an electrical field alone; providing a second electrode member; providing a layer of a suspension of particles in an insulating liquid between said injecting master and second electrodes; and applying an electrical potential difference between said conductive substrate and said second electrode of magnitude sufficient to cause imagewise migration of particles as a result of charge carrier injection from said injecting material until an image is formed. Many suitable organic and inorganic injecting materials are specified and may be applied alone or combined with a binder; materials exemplified being polyvinyl carbazole alone, mixed with metal-free phthalocyanine, and combined with a melamine formaldehyde resin binder. The substrate may be coated with the injection material by any convenient means, e.g. electro-photographically or by stenciling. Image forming particles exemplifed are a carbon black and polyester resin composition, magenta dyed melamine formaldehyde resin, and iron oxide coated with melamine formaldehyde resin. A plurality of copies may be produced from a single injecting master electrode. The image formed on the second electrode may be transferred to another surface.
