814,299. Photographic processes; printing surfaces. MORAN SONS Inc., T. J. Oct. 11, 1955, No. 28911/55. Drawings to Specifications. Class 98(2) Relief images suitable for use as printing surfaces or for the production of Braille records or decorative reliefs are produced by photographic exposure of a thermoplastic transfer film such as of gelatin or glue sensitized with a compound which yields a gas on exposure, contacting the exposed surface with a receiving thermoplastic film, heating the films while pressing them together so that the gas expands and forms relief images in both films, then cooling and separating the layers to give two complementary relief images. The transfer films may be sensitized with diazonium salt such as p-diazodimethyl anilide zinc chloride, or with a mixture of ferric ammonium citrate and oxalic acid, and the gelatin or glue binder may be coated on glass or cellulose acetate. The receiving film may be of cellulose acetate which may be mixed with other thermoplastic substances such as a formaldehyde resin or methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate. The thermoplastic films may be heated together at 200-250‹F., under a pressure of 20-60 1b. per sq. in. The pressure may be raised gradually by 10 per cent during the initial contact period, and then dropped to about 10 lbs. per sq. in. during a short concluding part of the contact period. The initial contact period may be 2-3 minutes, and the concluding part 10-30 seconds. The films are then cooled and separated.
