Abstract

1,232,284. Shell boilers. NORTH EASTERN GAS BOARD. 6 June, 1969 [6 June, 1968], No. 26913/68. Heading F4A. A shell type boiler, such as a modified Lancashire boiler, with one or more horizontal firing tubes 12 each supplied with liquid or gaseous fuel by a burner 22, has means 24 for recirculating at least part of the exhaust gases to the region of the burning jet. Two firing tubes 12 may be provided and closed at their outer ends. In each tube is disposed a recirculating tube 24. The exhaust gases finally leave the boiler through lower flue 18, side flues (16), Fig. 2 (not shown), and main flue 19. In another embodiment, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the tubes 24 are omitted and the firing tubes are open at their outer ends. Exhaust gases are recirculated through the lower flue 18. The boiler need have only one firing tube and a plurality of smoke tubes. The exhaust gases may be used to heat air or feed water.
