The divergent flame tube 14 of combustion apparatus of the type having an air-jacketed flame tube supplied with air and fuel under pressure, is connected to the heat transfer tube 11 of a shell tube boiler through an accelerator portion comprising a constant cross-section part 29 and a part 31 of reduced cross-section in direct heat transfer relation with the water in the boiler, the arrangement being such that an annular zone of turbulence is formed on the flame tube side of the part of reduced cross-section so that the effective gas path from the fuel inlet of the flame tube to the heat transfer tube 11 is of divergent-convergent form. The air is fed to the flame tube to follow a spiral path, and the cross-section of the heat transfer tube 11 is reduced as it is father from the flame tube. Further gas passes of less cross-section may be connected to the first pass 11 by arcuate sections supported to allow expansion. The reduced cross-section of the gas passes may be provided by inserting cores, which may be connected in the boiler circulation. The boiler may have an annular return flue pass.
