Abstract
<PICT:0910559/III/1> Fluid hydrocarbons are heated for pyrolysis and catalytic reforming in a number of straight parallel tubes 7 spaced within a chamber and heated by a high velocity stream of non luminous gas from a burner 8 which is directed transversely of the tubes 7 so that the stream splits and circulates round the tubes. The non-luminous flame does not cause the sides of the tubes nearest the burner to overheat. The burner may direct a horizontal flame between rows of vertical tubes, or a burner at the bottom of the chamber may direct a flame between rows of horizontal tubes. The tubes nearest the burner may be omitted or shielded from the flame. The flame may impinge on the end wall of the chamber or on a remote hand of tubes, and the gases may be recirculated to the burner within or outside the chamber.
