Abstract

1,081,002. Hot water boilers. F. KAY and J. L. BALL. Jan. 6, 1966 [Jan. 8, 1965], No. 861/65. Heading F4W. In a solid fuel or oil-fired water heater, smoke, in the combustion products from a combustion chamber 4, is consumed at the flue throat 8 by a flame curtain, produced by a burner tube 2 having a plurality of gas burner jets 3, and then takes a circuitous path defined by baffles 10 around the water tubes 12 before entering outlet 11. In a modification (Fig. 3), the burner tube 2 is again located within a flue throat (21) but the latter is positioned so that said burner can play on solid fuel supplied by hopper (17) to the inclined grate (15). The gas burner may be used in addition for lighting the solid fuel fire. In both embodiments, as a result of convection, heating of the water tubes may be achieved by the use of the gas burners alone.
