Abstract
1,100,852. Consuming smoke. A. L. GIBSON. 10 Dec., 1965 [23 Jan., 1965], No. 3051/65. Heading F4W. A domestic fireplace has behind its firegrate 17 a boiler 10 which has associated with it a burner means for igniting smoke produced by the fire in the firegrate thereby providing heat for the boiler. The boiler 10 consists of a front water receptacle 12 connected by pipes 14 to a back water receptacle 13 which is connected to the usual hot water system by pipes of which one 19 is shown. The two open sides of the passage formed by the receptacles are wholly closed by the burner plates 11 each of which comprises a vertical series of jets 26 supplied with fluid fuel by pipes (not shown) connected to the mains supply. The jets are so arranged that with the usual chimney throat 21 closed by damper 20 (posn. shown), smoke from the grate 17 entering the said passage via duct 16 is ignited by the said jets thereby reducing the smoke particle content of the combustion gas and also additionally heating the water receptacles. The burner plates are of inverted L-shape form each comprising an elongated vertical portion containing the jets and a slightly narrower upper portion 24 (not shown) which serves to define the exit 25 of the combustion gas passage. A hot wire igniter or a pilot jet may be provided for the lowermost jet of each series. The size of the flames may be regulated by means of a tap (not shown) on the supply line. Automatic control of the burner means could be achieved by using some electronic device in conjunction with a means of measuring smoke density. Burner 22 of known construction is used to ignite fuel in the firegrate. The burner means may be of any suitable form such as a plate having a single vertical row of jets and a C- or U-shaped horizontal cross-section. Such burner means could be used with the boiler to define a combustion passage.
