Abstract
1,230,726. Zone-melting. SIEMENS A.G. 29 May, 1969 [30 May, 1968], No. 27363/69. Heading B1S. A rod of semi-conductor material is zonemelted using a single turn induction coil having a laterally elongate cross-section which increases in thickness from the inside, reaching a maximum at the outside, e.g. by tapering (Fig. 1) or stepping, or an intermediate point (as shown). In the latter case, the internal side of the coil complements the shape of the molten zone. The ratio of external to internal width may be greater than 1.5 to 1. The zonemelting process may be effected in hydrogen and/or rare gas or in a vacuum. It may involve formation of a constriction (Specification 926,497) or lateral shifting (Specification 1,044,592).
