Abstract
1,230,099. Knitting-machines. WILLIAM COTTON Ltd. 27 Aug., 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 40530/67. Heading D1C. A draw-off mechanism for straight-bar machines knitting garments pieces onto rib or turned welts comprises chains 4 which draw the fabric between closable nip rollers 18, 20 which can grip the fabric and a stripper plate 46 which removes the fabric from the drawoff points. The chains carry a bar 16 having points 17 for engaging a rib welt, or plates carrying a welt rod; and may be packed or driven continuously, as may the lower nip roller 18. The upper roller is pivotable about axis 23, and the stripper is swingable about axis 35. The chains are racked to draw off the fabric, until the fabric if short is pressed off, or if long passes roller 18 and temporarily stops the racking. In the case of a short piece the chains rapidly carry the garment between the rollers, until a switch is tripped to stop the drive and lower the upper roller. Roller 18 is rotated to draw the stripper through the nip together with the fabric and thus pull it of the points-see Fig. 12. If the fabric is long the racking of the chains is terminated when it passes the roller and trips the switch. If a turned welt has been knitted the fabric is similarly drawn off and released; the welt bar being eased from its hooks by arms 20c which catch it when roller 20 is lowered. To prevent re-engagement of the hooks 17 in the fabric when they are returned, a deflector rod 81 sweeps down to carry the fabric with it as roller 20 is raised.
