927,598. Knitting-machines; slitting fabric. BURLINGTON INDUSTRIES Inc. April 18, 1961, No. 14028/61. Classes 31 (1) and 74 (2). A straight-bar knitting-machine has a heater element 84 mounted on a bar 70 of the narrowing frame of the machine which is adapted to engage a fabric knitted of a thermoplastic yarn as it is withdrawn from the machine and thereby slit it. The element is adapted to automatically engage the fabric after the first few courses have been knitted and withdrawn by the welt hooks 42 and to be automatically removed from and replaced in operation before and after the automatic welt turning movements whereafter the fabric is withdrawn by the hooks on the draw-off straps 59 engaging the welt rod 58. Fabric portions for the production of tights may be slit during production to provide portions with edges which may be sewn together to produce the complete article. U.S.A.
