In a double bed flat knitting machine, a drawing-off comb 6 is lifted into position with its hooks projecting over the planes of the needle beds and its hooks 52 are caused to engage a draw thread by operation of the needles of one bed, the article being pressed off the hooks when completed or when draw-off is taken up by a roller, the comb being returned to its original position when the article is complete. As shown, comb 6 is hinged to a base plate 5 and spring biased to its basic position, Fig. 2. Plate 5 is mounted in holders 1, 2 slidable on guides 3, 4. A presser-off 7 is hinged to a shaft 19 and is also biased to its basic position, Fig. 2. Shaft 19 is mounted in slides 21, 22 movable in spring biased guides 23, 24; 25, 26. An operating bar 34 rigidly connected to shaft 19 carries a roller 35 which engages a pivoted bar 36 which can be pulled down by a controller controlled by punched cards and is restored by spring 41. In operation, comb 6 is lifted until the hooks 52 extend between the needle beds 72, 73, a bevel 75 on comb 6 striking a bevel 76 on bed 73 to tilt the comb 6 over bed 72 until an initial thread is fed across the machine and engaged by the needles 70 of bed 72. The comb is then released and descends under its own weight. As comb 6 was raised, presser-off 7 engaged the underside of bed 72 and was moved until pawls 31 on shaft 19 engaged means 32, 33. During the downward movement of holders 1, 2 pawls 31 are released and presser-off 7 is returned to its basic position meanwhile sweeping over hooks 52. The bar 36 is then pulled down and presser-off 7 pushes the thread out of the hooks and presses off the article. A long article is engaged by roller 82 after comb 6 has drawn-off sufficient fabric for it to be engaged by rollers 54.
