Abstract

1,229,371. Mounting I. C. engine crank-shafts. SCHWERMASCHINENBAU KARL LIEBKNECHT MAGDEBURG VEB. April 29, 1969, No. 21742/69. Heading F1B. An I.C. engine of the in-line or V-type, has its cylinder block 2, Fig. 1, secured to its crankcase 1 by tie bolts 3, and has thrust bushes 7 arranged coaxially over the tie bolts. Each bush 7 has nuts 8, 9 at its ends by which its effective length can be increased to clamp an associated main bearing cap 6 in position as shown. The nut 8 may be replaced by a hydraulically-actuated lengthincreasing member (16), Fig. 2 (not shown), and a locking nut (17). The bearing caps are additionally secured in position by bolts 10 and are located by guide pins 15. After removal of bolts 10, and after slackening nuts 9 until they rest on nuts 8 and lifting the bushes 7 into pockets 22, the bearing caps can be raised to permit replacement of the bearing shells. The main bearing bore can be machined, without attaching the cylinder block, by temporarily assembling the bearing caps to the crank-case.
