Abstract

1,213,996. Cable terminations. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. 23 Sept., 1968 [4 Oct., 1967], No. 45225/67. Heading H2E. An electrical stress grading element, fitted to the termination of a high-voltage cable, comprises a sleeve 10 of insulating synthetic rubber around the external insulation I of the cable C, in sliding wedge engagement with a frustoconical member 11 of synthetic rubber in which carbon particles are dispersed to render it semiconductive. A tubular extension 20 of conical member 11 is slid on to the cable insulation I and is retained in abutment and electrical contact with the cable ground shield S by means of a semi-conductive adhesive tape 22. The wider portion of member 11 is provided with a peripheral beading 19. To facilitate fitment of the sleeve 10 on to the cable insulation, the latter may be smeared with silicone grease which collects in a cavity 16 when engagement of members 10 and 11 compresses the sleeve against the cable. Further stress grading is effected by an outer insulating rubber sheath 23 which also seals and protects the junction between the sleeve 10 and cone 11. Members 10, 11, 23 may conveniently be of the same elastomeric material as that of the cable insulation I.
