Abstract

1484261 Cable terminations RAYCHEM Ltd 22 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 40186/73 Heading H2E A termination for a high voltage cable 9 comprises a bush 2 of insulating material and at least one further insulator 16 located along the cable between the exposed centre conductor 10 and the exposed earthed screen 12. Each insulator 16 has a diaphragm- or flap-like structure and may be attached to the cable directly or to a voltage stress relieving layer 14 of material having a voltage dependent resistance and may contact the bush as shown to give a snug fit. In other embodiments the insulators 16 are secured to the bush (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) by moulding and/or adhesive or are sandwiched and adhesively held between portions of the bush (Fig. 3, not shown) and extend to the cable. Alternatively, if the cable insulation 11 is plastics, this may be circumferentially grooved when the members 16 are the material between the grooves. Voltage stress relief at one end 24 of the bush may be by high resistance coating on the cable or by the use of a cone (Fig. 2, not shown). The termination is sealed by a sleeve 17 which may be of insulating or non-linear resistance material (or conducting material when used in conjunction with a cone). The cavity 6 may contain oil or air or may be vacuous. Layer 14 and sleeve 17 may be of heat shrinkable material detailed in Specifications 1,433,129, 1,470,501, 1,470,502, 1,470,503 and 1,470,504.
