1,204,586. Making alloys. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. Jan.22, 1969 [Jan. 30, 1968], No.4799/68. Headings C7A and C7D. An ingot with a columnar crystal structure is produced of an alloy consisting of Al 5-11% Ni 7-25% Co 20-55% Ti 1-11% Cu 0-10% Nb 0-4% Fe (at least 13%) balance, apart from S, C and impurities, by forming a C-containing deoxidised melt of the Fe, Ni, Co and any Cu and Nb from a base charge (of which part may be scrap from a previous melt), but without Al or Ti (except any introduced as scrap), adding the Al and Ti (or remaining Al and Ti) and S to the melt, and casting the melt into a mould with a bottom chill. If the base charge is formed wholly of virgin raw materials, deoxidation is effected with e.g. Al or Si, and C is preferably added after deoxidation and before the addition of the alloying element Al. If the base charge is partly of scrap, no special deoxidation will be necessary, while all C may be introduced by the scrap; otherwise, C is added to the base charge or melt. In the melt, C may range from 0À03-0À25% and S from 0À2-1À2%. Casting is preferably effected at 1550‹ -1700‹ C. into an exothermic mould. Permanent magnets may be made from the columnar portion of the ingot by solution heating (e.g. at 1220‹ C.), rapidly cooling (e.g. in oil), heating in a magnetic field (e.g. at 830‹ C.), and isothermally ageing (e.g. at 570‹ C.).
