Abstract

1,204,785. Making alloys. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd. Jan.22, 1969 [Jan.30, 1968], No. 4800/68. Headings C7A and C7D. An ingot having a columnar crystal structure is made of an alloy consisting of Al 6-11% Ni 7-25% Co 20-55% Ti 1-6À5% Cu 0-10% Nb 0-4% Fe (at least 13%) balance except for C and impurities, by forming a melt of the constituents except Ti and Al and including in it C 0À01-0À25%, subjecting the melt to vacuum, adding the Ti and Al, holding the melt under vacuum for at least 2 minutes, and then casting in an ingot mould with a bottom chill. The initial melting and the Ti and Al additions are preferably effected under an inert gas. Permanent magnets may be made of the columnar portion of the ingot by solution-heating (e.g. at 1275‹C.), rapid cooling (e.g. in oil), heating in a magnetic field (e.g. at 799‹, 812‹ or 820‹ C.), and ageing (e.g. at 590‹ and then 560‹C.).
