Abstract

A permanent magnet is made by selecting a composition from the group Mn 67-69%, Al 29-32%, C 0.3-3% or from the group Mn 70-72.5%, Al 26.5-29%, C 0.5-2.5%, heating the composition to 1380-1500 DEG C., casting the melt into an ingot, quenching the ingot from 880-1250 DEG C. and isothermally tempering it at 500-650 DEG C. The composition is melted in an inert atmosphere; for example it may be heated from room temperature to 800 DEG C. in a vacuum and from 800 DEG C. upwards in an argon atmosphere.
