Abstract

Magnetic alloy for use in current limiters and magnetic memories is characterised by having (a) a compsn. consisting of 68.0-73.0 esp. 70.0-72.2 wt.% Mn and (1/10 Mn-6.6) to (1/3 Mn-22.2) wt.% C, the rest being Al and (b) a magnetic hysteresis loop with a wasp waist is which the Ir/I10,000 (the ratio of the residual magnetisation (4 PI Ir) to the magnetisation of a magnetic field strength of 10,000 Oe (4 PI I10,000) is 0.0-0.2. The alloy has considerable changes in permeability in alternating magnetic fields. Excellent magnetic hysteresis loops. The alloy pref. contains lamella of the cpd. Mn3AlC, and is in the form of a monocrystal. The alloy is formed by heating an initial alloy possessing mainly the hexagonal crystal structure phase of 530-750 esp. 530-670 degrees C. under the influence of an aisotropic stress of 15-50 kg/mm2.
