Abstract

A permanent magnet has as a constituent a phase which has been produced by a thermal treatment and which contains at least 60% Mn with the remainder substantially Al, the phase having a tetragonal crystal structure with an axes ratio c/a of >1 and <2. An example of this phase is that occurring in a binary Mn-Al alloy (Mn: Al atom ratio 5:4) and having the required structure with an axes ratio about 1.3 and an occupation of the lattice points 0, 0, 0 and 1/2 , \ba1/2 , \ba1/2 with a preference of the Mn atoms for one of these points. The Mn-Al alloy may be heat-treated to obtain the tetragonal phase by either (1) heating at a temperature below 1000 DEG C. for a sufficient time, or (2) cooling between 825 DEG and 600 DEG C. at a rate of 0.5-100 DEG C./second, or (3) cooling to below 825 DEG C. at a rate of more than 100 DEG C./second and then heating between 825 DEG and 600 DEG C. for a sufficient time. Homogenization before and annealing at 200-600 DEG C. after the phase-production heat treatment is beneficial. Particles for the production of the magnet may be produced by either (1) effecting solid state diffusion of powders of the constituent metals or pre-alloys thereof or (2) pulverizing a cast or sintered Mn-Al body with or without a prior heat treatment so that the brittle b phase is obtained. The particles are then heat-treated to produce the tetragonal phase. Alternatively the body may be pulverized after the phase-production heat treatment. The particles are formed into a magnet by compression with or without sintering; they may be oriented in a magnetic field before or during compression. Specification 771,538 is referred to.
