Abstract
1,196,282. Metal-vapour lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 6 June 1967 [7 June, 1966], No. 26100/67. Heading H1D. The filling of a high-pressure mercury vapour lamp includes at least one of bromine, chlorine, and iodine, together with thorium, scandium, and an alkali metal, preferably sodium, the mercury being completely vaporized at the operating temperature and the thorium concentration being between 25 and 90 mole per cent of the sum of the scandium and thorium concentrations. The preferred concentrations are, in gm. atoms per cm. of arc length: 2À5 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> to 8À0 x 10<SP>-5</SP> for mercury ; 5À2 x 10<SP>-7</SP> to 7À5 x 10<SP>-6</SP> for the sum of the thorium and scandium ; and 1À0 x 10<SP>-6</SP> to 1À0 x 10<SP>-4</SP> for sodium; the ratio of halogen to mercury atoms preferably lying in the range 0À025 to 0À85. Argon, at 23 torr pressure, may also be present. The construction of the lamp is the same as that described in Specification 1,028,228.
