Abstract

1,197,131. Metal-vapour lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 14 June, 1968 [26 June, 1967], No. 28545/68. Heading H1D. A discharge lamp having a filling which includes mercury in a quantity which is completely vaporized at the normal operating temperature, and chlorine, bromine, or iodine, includes also bismuth in a quantity sufficient to increase the ultra-violet emission from the lamp. The preferred filling is between 1À9 x 10<SP>-4</SP> and 1À5 x 10<SP>-7</SP> gm. atoms per cm. of arc length of mercury, yielding a partial pressure of ¢ to 14 atmospheres in operation; halogen in a ratio of 0À002 to 0À85 atoms per atom of mercury; bismuth in the range 1À9 x 10<SP>-9</SP> to 1À4 x 10<SP>-5</SP> gm. atoms per cm. of arc length; and 20 to 50 torr argon as starting gas.
