Abstract
1,051,169. Discharge lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Oct. 15, 1963 [Oct.16, 1962], No. 40701/63. Heading H1D. The filling of a discharge lamp, e.g. a high pressure lamp, comprises iodine and mercury atoms in the ratio 0À1 to 0À85, an inert gas, and either 5 mg. thorium sliver in each electrode and 2À6 x 10<SP>-7</SP> to 2À6 x 10<SP>-6 </SP>g. at. thorium per cm. of arc length, or, with no thorium slivers, 5À2 x 10<SP>-7</SP> to 5À2 x 10<SP>-6</SP>g. at. thorium per cm. of arc length. Cadmium or thallium may also be included to improve the colour balance, and sodium, introduced as the metal or as the iodide, may be included at 5À25 x 10<SP>-7</SP>-6À8 x 10<SP>-5</SP> g. at. sodium per cm. of arc length to stabilize the arc. Rare gases helium, argon, krypton or xenon, at 25 mm., aid starting. The mercury pressure may be a half to several atmospheres at operating temperature of 450- 700‹ C. The construction of the tube is the same as that described in Specification 1,028,228.
