A carton has each end wall formed from two overlapping panels 4, 5 attached to the front and back wall panels 2, 3, respectively, and also has extension panels 37 adapted to fold inside the end walls. Three triangular gussets 8-10 link the panels 4, 5 to the base 1 and in the erected carton are folded inwards so that the gusset 8 lies against the base, the gusset 9 against that, and the gusset 10 on top of the gusset 9. The gussets 8-10 may be stuck to each other or the base by adhesive. In the embodiment shown, when the panels 37 are folded into the carton, flaps 39 lie on the base 1 and the edge 42 spaces the inner end wall from the outer. Panels 35, 36 are folded in and tongues 43 engage slots 41, so that the panels 35, 36, 37 form a cradle for an article the ends of which are held in cut-outs 38. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), extensions (45) are formed on the panels 5 and folded in before the extensions 37 so that they act as springs against the end of an object pushed through the cutouts 38. Panels, similar to panels 35, 36, are folded in, but there is no tongue and slot connection. As a modification, an additional panel may be provided between one end panel 4 and its associated extension panel 37, or one additional panel may be provided between each pair of panels 4, 37. This or these additional panel or panels may extend, e.g. horizontally, acting as spacer means between the erected end and extension panels 4, 37.
