Abstract

1,191,679. Door closing and holding device; door holders. GRANT PULLEY & HARDWARE CORP. 13 Nov., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], No. 51489/67. Headings E2A and E2M. A door closing and holding device 10 comprises a tubular housing 26 defining a chamber 34 closed at one end by a disk 74 with a slot 76 therethrough, a connecting arm 20 formed of flexible strips 52 which passes through the slot and which at one end is operatively connected to a door 12 by a bracket 18 and at its other end is pivotally connected between bifurcated arms of a piston 36 slidably disposed within the housing, and a compression spring 62 around the arm with one end against the disc and the other received by a sleeve 42 on the piston. The flexible strips, made of e.g. spring steel or polypropylene, have spaced apart portions which are flexed towards each other on passing through the slot 76 and thus retard the opening of the door. If the door is stopped in a position after the apex 56 of the spaced portions has passed the slot, it is held in this position (Fig. 6, not shown) but closes under the action of the spring if given a slight push. The door is also held in the fully open position (Fig. 7, not shown). The rate of closing of the door is controlled by controlling the rate of escape of air through an orifice 32 by means of an adjusting screw 78 threaded in an opening in a boss 30, a sealing washer 44 being retained in the housing by an end rib 48 of the piston.
