Abstract

1442358 Door closers EMHART CORP 24 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 44676/73 Heading E2M A door holder-closer 10 comprises a mounting bracket 69. for attachment to a frame or door and carrying a door closer 20 having a shaft 32, a spring urging rotation of the shaft in one direction, a damper controlling such rotation and arms 16 for connecting the shaft to the door or frame, and also carrying an electrically operated mechanism 28 for retaining a latching mechanism 26 in the position in which it retains a part of a one-way clutch 24, another part of which is coupled to the shaft so that rotation of the shaft is resisted in the said one direction and permitted in the opposite direction. When solenoid 96 is energised the latch is engaged and the one-way clutch allows the door to be opened but prevents the spring door closer 20 from closing the door until the solenoid is deenergised, e.g. in response to means detecting fire or smoke, and the latch released. The clutch 24 comprises an outer part 44, having a latching recess with sides 52 shaped to cam latch 94 out of the recess when it is released, coupled by balls 40 to a coaxial inner part 36 in a manner permitting relative rotation in one direction only, the inner part 36 being coupled to the shaft 32 through pads 54, of e.g. asbestos, between the part and plates 56 held against rotation on square end 34 of the shaft 32; thus the door can be pushed closed by overcoming the frictional force on the pads 54, which is adjustable by means of screw 62. Alternatively inner clutch part 36a may be non-rotatably engaged with shaft part 34a, Fig. 7, (not shown).
