Abstract

1,178,767. Impregnated fibre glass insulation. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. 16 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 22551/67. Heading H1A. An electrical insulating material consists of glass fibres bonded with polyphenylene oxide. The glass fibres are impregnated with a solution of polyphenylene oxide in a volatile solvent, e.g. toluene. A conductor may be braided with glass fibres and impregnated by dripping or spraying on a solution of polyphenylene oxide in toluene, which evaporates rapidly at room temperature. Alternatively, a conductor is coated with the impregnating solution, dried, braided with glass fibre and then drawn through toluene vapour. In other examples, impregnated glass fibres are wound on to a conductor which is then drawn through an atmosphere of toluene, or impregnated fibres are woven into a strip which may be used to cement together mica and other glass fibres.
