Abstract
1,130,411. Making cables. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 June, 1967 [19 Aug., 1966], No. 37318/66. Heading H1A. In a method of manufacturing electric cable, one or more conductors of a cable core 1 with fibrous insulation (e.g. paper) are continuously passed through a non-aqueous liquid seal 4 into a heated and evacuated drying enclosure 8 in part of which the cable core moves in a multi-turn helix having a diameter large compared with the diameter of the core and, without exposure to the atmosphere, the insulation is impregnated by passage through insulating impregnating material. In the embodiment, the core leaves the enclosure 8 through impregnating material in an exit seal 6 and then passes through two further quantities of impregnating material in a partitioned enclosure 10, in the portion 12 of which there is a temperature gradient to reduce the temperature of the impregnant to its freezing or ambient temperature. The enclosure 8 contains many mutually parallel spindles (22) (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) arranged on a circle on which off-set cylindrical grooved rollers provide a multi-turn helical support for the core. The enclosure 10 contains, mounted on an end cover, a similar system of rollers on each side of the partition 13. The fibrous material may also include fabric tapes or rovings, glass fibres or synthetic fibres.
